*Christmas Crapingles*

23 Dec

So, I am not the biggest fan of Christmas songs. I refer to them as Christmas Crapingles to give you a clue. It might have to do with the fact that from the age 8 to 13 I had to dress in a cardboard box wrapped in Christmas paper and sing Christmas tunes at convalescent homes across the city. Yeah, seriously. That cooooould play a factor in my dislike for such a genre, but I’m not a expert, so what the hell do I know. Hoooowever, this year (with a little help from my friends)((I love using this lyric if you didnt already notice)), that has changed. My Christmas spirit has risen. Hallelujah Baby Jesus! I’ve decorated trees and gingerbread houses. I’ve laced the outside of my apartment with tinsel and even baked a little. Yeah, the cookie dough came out of a tub but still. I baked. So, although I hate to go there and post some jingle bell ridden tunes. I couldnt resist. Cause this Bruce Springsteen Christmas extravaganza (I told you you would hear about him soon enough) was this first song I heard this season that made me go…”Aight, mhmmmm, hellll yeah…this is funky. Yeaaaaaah, Im in the spirit. Get it….” as I danced the ornaments over to the tree.

And then it all just snowballed from there. ‘Cause once I start sledding down the musical bunny hill, there is no stopping me. Not even a tree. Ill just add musical ornaments to it. Like this Otis Redding version of the same song. Let me just say that Otis is the stocking to my stuffer. So you best believe this one was added to my holiday playlist.

And John Lennon? Well, it just wouldn’t be a Christmas without this song. (Thank you Dad…..)

So after noticing that even Christmas Crapingles got me dancing around my house, office, friends apartment, whatever, I thought to myself, “Well, if all my favorite musicians are loving it, why can’t I?” And that is when I accepted the fact that it is ok to love some of the crapingles. And that, kids, is the story of how a young woman found it in her heart to embrace the Christmas cheer. Which also means: If I wanna be a true groupie, I mine as well go all the way. Ho Ho Ho!

With that being said, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa and Happy Belated Hanukkah to all my friends and readers. Thank you all for being you! Be safe! And much love to you and yours!!!! See you on the flip side!

*Freedom or Death*

21 Dec

I heard it and then I read it. Freedom or Death brings a perfect blend of Folk and Electro-Pop to the table. Seriously? Did someone crawl into my brain while I was sleeping and pull from the vault of my musical preferences? ‘Cause this is like a dream come true. It might be slightly obvious from my previous posts that I go back and forth from genre to genre as any “music appreciator” would. But even so, I always find that Electro-Pop and Folk are my go to genres. So, how convenient is it to have it all wrapped up into one? Very convenient actually. Its like the ebony to my ivory, the ying to my yang, and the brandy to my eggnog (keeping it festive). So, I guess it’s true. Opposites really do attract. A big shot out to Paula Abdul and that awkward rapping, tap dancing, cartoon cat for teaching me that one.

Oh, but wait, that’s not all. They decided to cover a little Hip-Hop up in here too. Yeah. So, what’s that movie called where they break into your dreams while you are asleep? Oh yeah, Inception. But I’m not building an army to protect my dreams in this movie. They are more than welcome to enter and take from my musical vault anytime they choose.

Hells Bells*Cary Ann Hearst

20 Dec

Thank you AC/DC for coining Hells Bells (one of my all time favorite phrases) and thank you Cary Ann Hearst for giving me a new song to desk drum to. You are the sulfur to my gunpowder.

One Red Thread*Blind Pilot

I love folk. Folk. Folk. Folk. I also love bands that are creative with their passion. ‘Cause you see, since I started studying music business, there have been some doors that have opened in this brain of mine that I did not even know existed. And everyday, I learn something new about something I love whether it be a marketing tactic or a copyright infringement. Either or, it is all absolutely amazing to me. Who would of thought learning about something you love with every part of your being would be fun? Yeah, I know, duh. (Im smart. I promise. I aced the Music Law final. ‘Nuff said.) Enough about me though, cause I’m not the one to gloat, at all. I’m here to talk about Blind Pilot. Because within minutes, literally minutes, I am a Blind Pilot follower for life. And not just because their musical talent seeps into my folky bloodstream. But because they were creative in hooking music lovers like myself. Get this: “The band completed a bicycle tour in 2008, biking from Bellingham, Washington to San Diego, carrying their instruments on custom bicycle trailers they fashioned themselves. They made more than two dozen stops along the way, including Port Townsend, Seattle, Olympia, Portland, Corvallis, Eugene, Coos Bay, Arcata and Santa Cruz.” Um, yeah. I don’t know about you, but that totally captured my heart and I’m not even a bike rider. So why you ask? ‘Cause it was different. It was down to earth, easily relatable, and just down right real. All the things a fan wants, even if they don’t even know they do. Here is how I see it: As fans, we count on those with the talent some of us don’t have (unfortunately) to write and play the soundtrack to our lives. And the more real they are about it, the faster we will grab on for the ride of our lives. Filling our brains with memory markers of the things we want to talk about when we arrive at our final destination. Wherever that may be…..

Excuses (Yours Truly session)*The Morning Benders

16 Dec

Fact: The Beatles are never wrong. Ever. Example: You get by with a little help from your friends. And in this case, really talented friends. I wasn’t really a fan of the this song originally, but came across this video and had a change of heart. And by change I mean my heart went from a solid to a liquid, melted by the harmonies, violins, multiple percussionists and the pureness of one of the best things in the world, friendship. Ahhhhhh……Rainbows and Unicorns, my friends. Its all rainbows and unicorns.

I’m On Fire*Bat For Lashes (Springsteen Cover)

14 Dec

Ok. Ok. I admit. Ive had a really hard time finding musical inspiration lately. Nothing has really caught my heart afire. So, instead of ignoring the issue at hand, I will dig though the files and pull out the match to keep the flame under my ass lit. Let the smell of sulfur permeate your musical air as I present to you one of my all time favorite covers.

54 46 Was My Number*The Milk

9 Dec

The number of the day today is 54 46. And no, I am not asking you to play the stupid number game that is completely taking over my Facebook friends at the moment. (I will not participate, so dont even try). Im talking The Milk. The soulmate (in addition to coffee) to my oreo cookie. And they couldnt come at a better time ’cause my mouth was starting to get a little dry and oreo crusted. Which really means, my sluthing for new music to wet my pallet was failing this week. Until today. And yeah, it is a cover but still, they are fresh, unsigned, and wholesome. Plus, thier other demos are full of Vitamin D and nutrition. Milk, it really does a body good.
